far off countryside

I don’t really have a language I wish I could speak. We don’t travel abroad so I don’t feel there is a need. If we did, I’d probably have an opinion on this. If there was a foreign country I loved to visit and learning that language made things easier, then yes.   Otherwise, I can name several examples but I can’t say there is a language I wish I knew.

My mom’s parents were Polish and spoke very little English. My mom was fluent, as was one of my aunts. This was long before I was born, but I’ve heard from siblings, every trip to Babcia and Dziadzia’s (Polish for grandmother and grandfather) there would be little English spoken. Had I been born sooner and learned Polish, I’d been able to communicated with my grandparents.

My Dad’s side is from Hungary and we recently found some of his family there, in Slovakia.  My Dad spoke fluent Hungarian, as English was his second language. My cousin learned a bit of English in high school, but speaks mainly Slovak. When we communicate, it’s thanks to Google Translate.

Then, we have dear friends from Quebec who we meet every year in Sturgis. They speak English, but amongst themselves, French. We will be learning a little French as there is a fun drinking song we will be learning before our next trip!
