Day 3 of Bloganuary and I’m still in the game! Today’s prompt is “What is the earliest memory you have?”
I have a few memories, but the most pleasant one is playing in my sandbox in the backyard, in the sunshine. It was a warm day and I can still hear the cicadas, though at the time I had no idea what those were. I was probably four. I was alone on that day, though the neighborhood was filled with kids my age. I don’t recall any sand toys or what I was doing. What I remember most was the bright, hot sun.
As I grew, the sandbox was replaced with a lilac bush my mom planted, which grew over the years to almost the bottom of the second floor windows. I had a chance, quite some time ago, to visit my childhood home, and now lilac bush was gone, just grass where my long ago sandbox and my mom’s lilac existed.
It’s a nice memory to return to on this cold, rainy day. The photo above is of course not my four year old feet, but the image conjures the feeling of hot sand and takes me back to that summer day, when life was so carefree.
As I type this, I wonder if there is someone else reminiscing about my backyard, where they spent their childhood years ago.
