Earlier this week I attempted onion rings in our air fryer and was amazed at how tasty they turned out. I need to experiment more with healthier recipes – the air fryer eliminates the grease, but it also makes frozen convenience food SO INCREDIBLY GOOD!! French fries, tater tots, jalapeno poppers, OMG. I tried this in efforts to arm myself with healthy recipes as to not defeat the purpose of the air fryer!
Also. There are other recipes for this out there – I read somewhere you could use crushed Cheerios for breading so I thought I’d give it a go myself and experiment without using a recipe. If this is the way you make yours, great minds think alike! I didn’t steal your idea. Seriously. 🙂
I used:
- 1 cup Cheerios
- 1 tbsp. garlic salt
- Yellow onions
- Egg whites (number of eggs depends on how many you plan to make – I started with one.)
Place the Cheerios and garlic salt in a Ziploc and crush with a rolling pin. Shake to mix.
Slice your onion and separate the rings.
Dip in egg white and shake the ring in the Ziploc bag to coat evenly with breading.
Place in air fryer. I tried placing a few more on the top layer which worked just fine. I have a 3 quart air fryer so I don’t have much room. 🙂
Cook at 360 for 6 minutes.
Heaven!
These take a bit to make, but are so worth it if you’re craving onion rings. Best of all, they are zero points on the WW Simply Filling plan. The breading tastes better than I thought! I can’t wait to try it out on other things like zucchini and homemade chicken strips!
Note: These are best when still warm out of the fryer. They’re okay when cooled, but not as great. Experiment with other seasonings besides garlic salt!
Next up, air fried polenta!
[…] we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I attempted onion rings in my air fryer yesterday and they were a HUGE success! I’ll be posting a write up later, […]
