Last year I bought some blueberry, blackberry and raspberry plants from Meijer, which later I thought was probably my first mistake. I planted them but didn’t expect anything last summer, as they were still tiny. But when fall came and there wasn’t as much as a green leaf on any of them, I figured that was it and just left them alone, thinking I perhaps should have just gotten better plants from a nursery.
My mom was an avid gardener, she loved her flowers and plants and could practically, as they say, stick a pencil in the ground and it two weeks it would be a rose bush. Me, I missed out on the green thumb gene completely.
Today while out weed whipping along the fence on this mild Mother’s Day weekend, I was thrilled to see life in each of the three tiny berry bushes that I had planted. Of course now I can’t remember which is which, but here they are.
It was like my dear late Mom happened to glance down from Heaven and say, “Okay, child, since you never picked up on anything I tried to teach you about gardening, let’s see what I can do with these..” And breathed some life back into them.
Thanks, Mom!
Happy Mother’s Day.
