Here’s a winter project once campfire season ends – save your cardboard tubes, paper shreds and Scentsy wax and make DIY firestarters! The idea started by stuffing cardboard tubes with dryer lint, but they didn’t seem to burn very well, just smolder. Then, my sister gave me a firestarter made from a Dixie cup, paper shreds with candle wax melted over top. Later, it occurred to me as I was dumping my Scentsy wax to stuff the cardboard with paper shreds and coat with the wax I was about to throw away.
Use TP rolls or paper towel rolls cut into thirds. Stuff with shreds from your paper shredder (not too full, oxygen needs to flow or they won’t burn).
Stand the rolls on end on some paper and pour your old Scentsy wax over top.
Leave until wax has cooled. It may leak out the bottom of the roll, if it does, once the liquid wax sets a bit, lift up the roll and press it down in the leaked wax, leave until it hardens. It may or may not completely fill one end of the roll. Using a Dixie cup would eliminate the wax running out the bottom, but using a cardboard tube just uses up something you’d recycle or toss anyway.
Place on top of your kindling and light. The wax soaked paper will burn nicely, as the melted wax runs down the roll and onto your kindling.
I have three Scentsy warmers going and the wax from each warmer makes three firestarters. I’ll have plenty to share in the spring with our camping buddies!
