Today’s writing prompt comes at a good time – I’m consciously making an effort to spend more time reading, something I’ve put off for years to do things “more important”. The topic for the prompt was, “How important are book covers in getting you to read a book?”
I’d say it’s the first step, because the cover illustration and title is what will get me to read the back, or the inside of the book jacket. The synopsis, of course, is what really closes the deal. Online communities such as GoodReads, sheds a whole new light. We have the traditional method of shopping in a bookstore, where reading the covers and intros are the options, and now skimming not only the summaries, but the reviews online at Amazon or other sources.
Honestly, I tend to stick to one genre, horror.. I’m a long time Stephen King junkie and I know what to look for. My non-fiction choices include various spiritual and self-help topics.
With that said, two more ebooks found homes on my tablet tonight, From a Buick 8 and 11/22/63, both from Stephen King.
Curling up with a blanket..
.
I am with you. I do look at the cover before deciding whether to go further. Admittedly, I have been wrong once or twice. My favorite books are literary fiction, but I read science fiction and mysteries.
I can read horror, but if it is supernatural horror, I can’t. I do enjoy Steven King, but he has made me sleep with the lights on one too many times. My favorite book of his is still The Stand. I just bought Dr. Sleep, but I am reading something else right now. It is next on my list. I’d like to read The Game of Throne series.
Non-fiction books: I prefer a true story or a biography.
Thanks for visiting my blog 🙂

The Stand was great! I have so many favorites by Stephen King. Funny, you are the second person to mention sleeping with the lights on or staying up all night after reading a Stephen King novel.. Are you on GoodReads?
