Gloomy Days

Dec 2, 2012

Ugh.

I hate days like this.  Gray, overcast sky.  Dreary, depressing, rainy.  It has such an effect on my mood, and I know that lots of others can relate.  Unfortunately, days like this are common here in Michigan.  Even the so called “light” coming in the windows is depressing.  It makes me want to buy drapes that completely block out the outside world and turn on every light in the house, instead of my curtains that let this nasty day into my dining room as I type this.

Normally, going out with my camera will get me out of any “funk” I might be in.  But the last thing I want to capture is this gloomy, depressing light that is cast on anything I’d want to photograph.

However, if I have learned anything from this life, it’s that things can ALWAYS get worse, and EVERYONE has SOMETHING to be grateful for.  I often list all the good things in my life, and refer back to them often, to keep my focus on positive things.  (Why focus on negative things?  It doesn’t help matters!!  Let them go.) So today, and on all depressingly crappy days to come, I will count my blessings.

Someone somewhere today is in a hospital room with a family member as they fight for their life.  I’m sitting here complaining about this gloomy day.

Someone somewhere today is battling with their own health issues.  I’m in pretty good shape.

Someone somewhere today is packing boxes because they are losing their home.  I’m tossing around the idea of putting up Christmas decorations, on this gloomy day.

Someone somewhere today is pretty lonely, having no family and few friends.  I just wrote on my calendar all the festivities going on this month that we’ve been invited to, hoping they don’t overlap.

I could have it so much worse.  I have skills, talents, opportunity.  The happiest marriage a girl could dream of.  I’ve gone places and seen things that most people won’t.

Today is gloomy, sure.  And there will be more days like this in this region, it’s just how it goes.  But count your blessings, today and always.  Be happy for all the good in your life.  Don’t let a gloomy day overshadow all that you’ve been blessed with.

  1. It is wonderful to look at the good things in our lives … even a rainy day (it’s a good excuse to enjoy a cozy day of doing little but catching up on nothing.) I too have many, many things to be greatful for.
