20150311_190824As soon as the weather breaks, this little twig is going to find its way into my yard, marking my first attempt at berry growing. I’ve been wanting to plant berries for so many years, and this year I think it’s time to give it a shot.

What the hell, right?

I was always hesitant in the past because of my concern that:
1) the birds would just eat them, and
2) crap all over everything.

Growing up, we had an awesome, creepy old mulberry tree in our front yard, perfect for climbing. The vinelike branches would grow all the way to the ground, making the perfect little hideaway until my Dad trimmed them up. So many summers were spent under that tree, which also served as second base when a neighboring kickball game ensued.  We’d climb, pick and eat berries, the bottoms of our bare feet stained purple.  Just the taste of a mulberry still opens the  floodgates of memories.

So for $6.99 at Meijer’s I decided to give it a go and see what happens. Berries freeze well and I love the idea of growing a bumper crop if I’m lucky and have plenty to store and give away. They’re also a breakfast favorite of mine, like in refrigerator oatmeal!

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I may just go back and get blueberry and raspberry plants as well.  With any luck they’ll survive my black thumb and all three will grow up together.

Stay tuned!
