In addition to jack-o’-lanterns and pumpkin seeds, shrunken apple heads are another icon of Halloween that make their way into my October festiveness.

I carved this guy from a honeycrisp apple (I know – the most expensive kind!) It was the last one in the bowl on my dining room table, and I was afraid it approaching mushiness. He’s been drying since Sunday, October 20th, and it still on his journey to be the perfect shrunken apple head.

I like to use apples with stems (for hanging later).  Peel the apple and carve a face or whatever you think up.  As the apple dries and turns brown, the face will shrink and wrinkle.  I’ve read to dip the apples in lemon juice, but that slows the browning, which isn’t exactly the objective here!

Once dried, tie a string to the stem, to hang from the branches of a Halloween tree, stacked in pyramids, whatever your tickles your creepy little fancy.

Are shrunken apple heads a part of your Halloween decor?  What have you come up with?
