The other morning upon arriving at work, I found a white envelope on my chair. It was a Christmas card from a co-worker, along with a paper snowflake, still folded as it if was just cut. I opened it to find it resembled the shape of a butterfly.
When she returned to her desk, I thanked her, and learned that she’s been giving away these paper snowflakes for years. She cuts each one out differently, but never opens them. She gives them to friends in a Christmas card, and they are the first to open them and see what they look like. That is her gift to them.
How cool. The idea of a paper snowflake was not new, but the manner in which it was given was. I’d seen several of these snowflakes in the cubes of various co-workers, and now I realized they’d been gift recipients in the past.
My snowflake now hangs outside my cube, a reminder of how a simple idea can be made into a unique memory.
