leavesAt first I thought this would be a very short post. In fact, I thought about posting a blank page (hahaha). But, as I challenge myself in my photography to find interesting in the mundane, I will challenge myself to find joy in….. November.

Since I was very young, November has always come accompanied by gloom. Even the sound of the word reminds me of sad violin music. Summer is gone, autumn’s colorful splendor is about over, Halloween has passed, and what’s left is a lonely, cold wind and bare, brown trees. And I’m not a cold weather person. I hate having to dress in bunchy layers, against icy wind that makes my face hurt, and my tolerance for the cold has dwindled as the years go by. My space heater is on as I type this. With my window open for fresh air.

But today was very uncharacteristic. Here in Metro Detroit we enjoyed a sunny day in the low 70s, very unseasonably warm for this region. So with these blue skies to lift my spirits, I made a list of things to look forward to this month.

  1. Creepy photography. Dead trees, lack of sunlight, it’s the perfect time of year to play with low light outdoor photography and fulfill my love for creepiness. Just have to bundle up. Drat.
  2. Backyard campfires. A summertime favorite, and so much nicer in the cool autumn air.
  3. Curling up with a book and a blanket. My Goodreads and Amazon Wish List grows daily!  Book + blanket + fireplace + tea = Heaven. Time to catch up on my reading list.
  4. Snow! I hate to use this four letter word, but the planning and anticipation of an up north snowmobile trip is so very exciting. Winter activities like this make the season go by so much faster – time flies when you’re having fun!  November doesn’t always bring snow to lower Michigan, but upper Michigan is a different story.
  5. NaBloPoMo. Of course! I might even try this more than one month out of every year! I love the huge gathering of bloggers in one place, reading about others’ lives and sharing mine.
  6. Thanksgiving. Last but not least, and certainly not the only time thanks is given in our household, it’s always a good time getting together with family.

How about you?
Is November just another month for you?  Favorite time of year, or not so much?
