Coffee by the river

Good morning from Algonac!  This time from the banks of the St. Clair River.  Pull up a camp chair and we’ll get a fire going. I’m over the moon happy to have secured a riverfront site here at Algonac State Park, though it was not fun getting the trailer backed in. In the dark. At least it wasn’t raining. For the second time we had to use the sliding fifth wheel hitch (a huge THANK YOU to Bill for ordering this kind!) because we had to jackknife it so sharp to make the turn. But we’re here.

Then we struggled to get our wet wood burning as I tracked the Manitoulin and then finally the Lee Tregurtha, before we called the chilly October night.

Earlier this morning I took this photo before the sun disappeared behind the clouds. I checked Marine Traffic and saw that I had JUST missed the Queen of the lakes, the Paul Tregurtha!

How was your week? I’m happy and still extremely surprised to share that my co-worker and I won an award at the CI expo on Wednesday, for Embracing the CI Process.

Though the Lean Six Sigma class was grueling, it helped immensely with my project work, knowing the guidelines to follow, what approaches to use and why. My assigned project consultant shared with me that not all CI project leads had yet taken the class and I knew how much more difficult it had to have been for them.  Now the last piece is to submit my paper to considered for my Green Belt certification. Everything I had to pull together for the expo is required in the paper, though, so it shouldn’t be a huge undertaking. The work is already done.  So YAY!

Then yesterday, the project Gods came through for us and we were notified that the deployment we’ve been scrambling for has been pushed back a month. And we finally got access to a software module we needed to be able to do our parts of the project. It was a good day.

Today we plan to visit beautiful downtown Marine City on the recommendations of a few friends who live in this area. I’ll have Marine Traffic by my side all weekend to be sure I catch as many freighters as I can. I’m coming to grips that this is our second to last camping trip of the year. Next weekend is the grand finale, Hayes Haunting at Hayes State Park in the Irish Hills.

Well, I think I’ll bundle up and head out into this chilly fall day. It’s sunny, at least, and that’s a pleasant surprise.  Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I just mentioned to Gary that he sounded so happy, and positive with everything this week, and I got the feeling that things are really going your way as well. LOVE IT! It’s awesome when all the parts that makes our life comes together. I’m so happy for you! Enjoy Marine City, and the rest of your weekend 🙂

  2. Hi Kathleen,
I have a camper’s hack for you from my backpacking days.
After a long trek, I hated making camp in the damp and struggling to get a fire going.
I solved it by keeping a 15 minute road flare in my backpack and every time I used it, our whole group was thankful. You can almost light wet rocks with a road flare.
Surprise Bill with this sometime and he will be impressed.
