It’s the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the cabin fever is starting already. Having it up to here with several frustrations in my life, I knew it was time for a release, time to jump in my car with my camera gear and get lost for a while. My “lens therapy” is what I need every time. When I’m out shooting, all is right in my world, and it’s how I’ve come to know that this is what I should be doing.
Landscapes are a favorite of mine, and also a challenge. Where I live (Detroit suburbs), plus the time of year (late November) makes it difficult to get a good, interesting photo, in my opinion. The fall colors are gone, everything is dead, no snow yet to make for a pretty winter scene. How do you make something interesting out of the mundane when you don’t have an entire weekend or even a day to venture further out? It’s tough, but it’s a challenge that will strengthen your talents in whatever you set out to do.
So today I was out walking at a nearby park, and a familiar phrase popped into my head: “Start where you are, with what you have..” I realized how much this particular phrase applies to so many things; my photography, my blog, blogs that I moderate and write for, and also the articles I write as a representative of Thunder Roads Magazine.
There will always be things, circumstances that could help us improve where we are. But don’t wait until things change. Start where you are with what you have. Get creative. Challenge yourself to make something interesting out of the mundane.

And remember, if it were easy, it wouldn’t be awesome.

I hear you … brown is beautiful and a great starting point today … but the dazzle of sparkling snow will cover the landscape soon and I’m looking forward to the change. Soon we’ll have a new perspective – change is good too.
🙂 I’m so looking forward to snow! It will change the looks of our region for sure. I look forward to peaceful walks int the woods with my camera..
