Some of you know that I surprised Bill with an early birthday gift – a Richard Petty Driving Experience – 18 laps around Michigan International Speedway in a real race car. Sunday, July 24th was the day we’d been waiting for. However with thunderstorms in the forecast, they rescheduled his 2pm appointment to 9am. We got up at the crack of dawn, left our house at 6am, met a friend for breakfast, got there, checked in, got through the driver’s class and as soon as we got out onto the track, the rain started. His day was eventually cancelled and rescheduled due to rain. Even though, there were several reasons it was Okay…
- Now Bill knows what exactly to expect. When he goes back this fall, he’ll be able to focus on driving without any feelings of nervousness.
- My sister and also his Mom wanted to come along, but couldn’t make it on this particular day. Now they get another chance to come watch.
- I got pics and video during the few hours we were there, and I get to go back for more!
- We got a ride around the track in one of their courtesy vans and the driver/instructor went over what was covered in class, as we sped around the 2 mile oval at 80 mph. It was like having real, hands on instruction. And the guy was hilarious! When he first pulled up in the van, he offered us candy.
The wicked clouds that blew in with the rain had a silver lining!
And that’s great news for sure. Hope the weather cooperates next time.
