The term photorides occurred to me today, which encompasses two of my obvious addictions, riding and photography. I googled it to see if it was a known phrase, and actually, one other photoblogger had used the term, but his last post unfortunately stated that his blog was dead, as of March 2012. Other mentions of photorides were mainly by bicyclist groups.
So, since that’s the majority of what I’ve done photography-wise, photorides will be a big part of this site – the photos I create, and the stories that are born from each journey. There’s not much time left in the 2013 riding season, and I’ll try to squeeze in as much riding as I can, as we do each year.
Carping the hell out of this diem is a wonderful little phrase I happened upon a while back, coined by Alexandra Bracken in her book, The Darkest Minds. Carpe diem is Latin for “seize the day”, and with fall so rapidly morphing into winter, I want to seize every moment, every chance to photograph the vibrant, colorful, but short lived autumn season, on my beloved motorcycle whenever possible. Aside from photography, it’s also a great reminder for our daily lives.
To prepare for fall/winter shooting, I’ve been in the market for some thin, warm gloves, the kind that would be warm enough but also thin enough to easily change the settings on my camera. Today at Costco I found these running gloves by Head.
They are made from snug-fitting, thermal material and are fleece-lined, complete with special fingertips for accessing a touch screen (of course). Rubber dots line the fingers and palms, and catch the camera controls perfectly (I tried it.) Hopefully they will be warm enough. Now that I am constantly freezing, many of my past ventures have been cut short due to my inability to withstand frigid temps.
Soon I’ll be sitting here as the wintry precipitation falls outside, hitting my dining room windows with its faint tick, tick tick, the hum of my trusty space heater at my feet. Days of heavy coats, boots, my new gloves and proper white balance techniques are before me, but hopefully not before many cool, crisp sunny autumn days filled with great photos just waiting to manifest.
I’ve got a lot of diems to carpe.
