It’s January 6th and though we haven’t yet had a chance to ride our snowmobiles (except for around the yard) our thoughts and daydreams always turn to South Dakota every first week of January. It’s now time to make our camping reservations for the 2011 Sturgis Rally, which starts August 8th.
Vacation time approved, tonight we started planning our trip, and it’s all that’s been on our minds all day. This will also be our first wedding anniversary, which we’ll spend back in Custer, the place of our nuptials. One great thing about getting married during the Sturgis Rally is you get to spend your anniversaries there.
Our home base will likely be Chris’ Camp, where we’ve stayed for the last six years. Great place, all the amenities, convenient location, and relatively quiet at night. This year we’ll arrive a week early, and be able to watch the bikes roll in. But, unlike most, we don’t go for the party and we don’t trailer. South Dakota is absolutely breathtaking, and we both left our hearts there that first trip out. And isn’t part of it about the ride, somewhere in there?
Among exploring the town of Buffalo and the northwest part of the state, we plan to visit Wounded Knee, and also the museum, located in Wall. I don’t want to miss the Jackpine Gypsies races and festivities this year, many rally-goers don’t realize that this is where it all began, all those years ago.
We’ve since purchased a pull behind utility trailer for Bill’s Ultra Classic, and we’re kicking around the thought of taking it this year. I’m hoping to come up with a USB modem by then, so I can blog from the road instead of piecing 15 days together all at once upon our return.
Ahh, so much to plan.. At night I can hear the distant rumble of thunder, and the roar of the wind.
Sweet South Dakota dreams..
