Halllloooo!!!
You may be aware that Bill and I celebrate every opening day of hunting season (firearm) in Michigan by watching Escanaba in da Moonlight. Today, as I was again brainstorming what to make for dinner, I had the idea to find pasties somewhere.
Note: Prepare for the results if you plan to ever Google “pasties near me”. Ahem. Anyway.
I found a local pasty shop on my way home and stopped in to see what our choices were. I’ve only eaten a pasty one other time, at the Buckhorn Saloon in the upper peninsula on a snowmobile trip. It was pretty good, but apparent that it was likely defrosted and microwaved.
So as I’m scanning the menu, I began an interesting conversation with the shop owner, the only person in the store. I won’t go into detail, all I’ll say is that if you’re up for an experience, visit Superior Pasties in Livonia. This guy is a hoot! I came out with three pasties, two steak and one chicken. The extra steak pasty had rutabaga, which he insisted we try.
Upon arriving home, I popped our refrigerated, up north goodness into the oven at 350 for about 35 minutes. We saved the rutabaga one for another day.
When the buzzer rang, out came our toasty yooper dinner. We were all settled in to watch our traditional movie…
..a tradition that now includes eatin’ pasties.. Delish! We’ll be back..
It’s a first for me to hear of this movie tradition and parties. Pasties look like a NY calzone, only I never heard of a rutabaga one, nor would entertain one. LOL. Enjoy.
It’s definitely native to Michigan.. Always a fun time. And yes, pretty much like a calzone with different contents.
