On this dreary, snow flurried Sunday, I talked Bill into going downtown with me to the Outdoor Adventure Center to see a presentation called Edmund Fitzgerald: What Really Happened? It was given by Ellen Kennedy of the National Museum of the Great Lakes down in Toledo, an awesome looking place I can’t believe I’ve never been to. Not for long!
It was an informative presentation, about an hour and a half long, covering the history and several different theories as to what happened that November night in 1975. As an unexpected bonus, we got to see the Lee Tregurtha at anchor on the Detroit River just across the street.
After the presentation, we walked around the center, as Bill had never been. It’s a very cool, hands on experience designed to bring “up north, downtown.” This was taken from the 3rd level.
Bill got in some target practice.
There’s also a snowmobile and 4 wheeler simulator. We went through the aquarium, the yurt exhibit and the kayak simulator on the first floor (how I miss my kayak!) and walked behind the waterfall.
Lots of history within these brick walls, formerly the Globe Building, Detroit Dry Dock Engine Works and the Detroit Shipbuilding company. It’s one of several structures in the area. This one was saved and I hope the others are too.
It was nice to get out and take Bill to a local treasure he’s never visited. Check it out if you’re in the area!
