I learned a new word today, from an Atlas Obscura post on Facebook. Tsundoku is a term for acquiring and piling up books you may never read. Ha! At least now I know there is a term for it.
I didn’t always accumulate books this way. I’ve always had a pile of books to read, so for a while I avoided buying more until I got through the ones I had. My sister lives in Florida, and one time visiting, we went to Books A Million, at the mall. She was more excited than I was, as I still had the “I have a ton of books yet to read” syndrome and didn’t get as excited. But we went.
Fast forward 10 years, and I’m a kid in a candy store. My TBR list is never ending, many of them books I’ve bought in the last several years. The discovery of Thriftbooks, Half Price Books, GoodReads, my library’s book sales and the numerous book related hashtags on Instagram ensure that my wish list grows by the day. Sigh. So little time.
I began allowing myself to collect (OK, hoard) them again when I remembered the feeling of being sucked into a book you just cannot put down. I decided having a large selection would be a good way to end a crappy day. Pick a title, curl up under a blanket and take a journey away from reality for a while even if you’re in the middle of another book.
So here is my tsundoku. OK, it’s a partial tsundoku. I can’t fit all my TBR list into one photo. This includes the four titles that just arrived from Thriftbooks!
Oh my, that looks like a big pile of tsunduko. Do you have a room just for the books.
🙂 I have one of those bookshelves from IKEA that take up an entire wall. I wish I had a room just for books!
[…] until St. Patrick’s Day, and then I’ll probably load up with more. I just published a post on tsundoku, or the act of buying books that just end up on your perpetual TBR.. I’m still […]
