We woke to rain tapping the tent, but after a while it let up. The skies to the west were like midnight as we made our way out of the campground to start our day.  We ended up riding part of Spearfish Canyon until realized I’d left behind my spare camera battery, and the one I was using was almost exhausted.  We rode back to camp, Bill took a nap on the picnic table and I checked email and looked up information on Beartooth Pass, our next adventure.

A bump and a loud scrape got our attention, and we looked up to see a truck and trailer coming down the camp road.  The truck came to a stop, and the trailer, about four feet behind it, kept rolling.  Bill shouted “GO!!!”  But it was too late.  BAM!!  The trailer’s tongue slammed into the back bumper. The ball and hitch were not the same size, and when the driver had gone over a speed bump, it jumped off. We helped the driver get reconnected, and I motioned to the truck behind them that it might be a bit. A minute later they got out, and we were happy to see that it was Troy and Kim, our friends from Iowa! With the truck and trailer reattached and on his way, our friends set up, opening their trailer to reveal a gorgeous 2009 blue and silver Ultra Classic! They’d gotten it in April, and kept it a secret this whole time.

We set up camp and caught up with each other as the sun set and thunder rumbled in distance. Soon, just like the year before, camp chairs and coolers were moved into their trailer as the first drops began to fall. Migrating to the TKO Bar & Grill, set up under the pavilion at the campground, we had dinner as the rain came down even harder. Tonight would be the beginning of the windiest conditions I’ve ever experienced. Canopy poles were broken, others were taken down in time. Our neighbors, who had left for a multiple day ride, would come back to their tents completely rearranged. Kim and Troy’s tent completely flattened in the wind with them inside it. More freaky weather was on its way.
