Perfect day for a Road Trip Sunday! Mid 70s and not a cloud in the sky.. Two things we wanted to cover today – The Oaks campground out in Jackson and STAGECOACH STOP which is now open again to the public!
We cruised out 94 to Race Rd. to find the campground first and do a ride through. We’ve never camped there before, only at Portage Lake which is a little ways down the road. My Polish navigation said to turn left on Seymour Rd. which of course was the wrong direction though a very scenic stretch. We turned back around and finally came up to a large sign for The Oaks pointing us back north to get to the campground. The road greeted us with this sign.
OMG, no they weren’t kidding. I can only hope they are getting ready to resurface it and not just try to scrape it level. Yikes. Fun stuff on a motorcycle.
So we made our way to the campground and talked with some very friendly staff there. They gave us a map, the schpiel, and we rode through the loops. Lots of permanent sites and some trees throughout, but as we made our way back to the office and the huge, open field for the rural campsites and overflow, I thought how amazing the stars would look in this vast open space with no trees to obscure them.
After checking out the campground, we made our way back to 94 east to 52 south to US 12 and into the Irish Hills. My sister had emailed me a Groupon type email advertisement a while back for Stagecoach Stop Western Resort – I was thrilled to hear the news that it was back open to the public! This morning on their Facebook page they posted that they’d be open until 5pm. Perfect day to check it out!
$5 to get in and take a Jeep tour around the property. Dan, our tour guide, was awesome. We drove through the familiar road past the buildings that were a part of the gunfight shows that used to take place prior to it closing.
Our next stop was to meet Tango and Cash – two beautiful longhorn steer! Tango is black, Cash is red.
And then, Slick and Daisy! Slick is the horse, Daisy is the pony.
And finally, Hambone, the rescued pot bellied pig, who loves asparagus!
We were so happy to revisit this place and see the efforts in place to get it going again. Check them out on Facebook for upcoming events and weekends they are open to the public. We also came across this sign outlining what they have going on.
A stop at Artesian Wells for dinner rounded out the day. It felt great to get back out on a day trip after the crummy weather we’ve had. The setting sun warmed our backs as we rode east to 23 and begin the jaunt home. A perfect end to a great weekend.
Looks like an interesting area to camp in … not so sure about the wide open spaces though. I like the trees.

Yes, some shade would be nice. The big open sky reminded me of out west though! 🙂
