What a day! I’d been dying for a Road Trip Sunday and here it is, the first one of 2017, on June 11th. We hit 93 degrees here in southeast Michigan.
Our first stop was the Vintage Market down at the Monroe County Fairgrounds, presenting Down on the Farm, a very cool outdoor vintage flea market. One of the lot attendants directed us to the front and we got to park just outside the gate! Time to change into flip flops.
The flyer we got at the gate included a full page of vendors! So much to see. I was glad to see that the heat and Michigan humidity didn’t keep away the scores of people milling around checking out vintage goods and other amazing creations.
The Mitten Kitten Sisters were in to town to display their awesome decked out campers and I got to catch up with a dear friend from high school.
Soon we were back on the bikes headed west, our favorite direction. 🙂 We ended up taking 50 to US 12 west, into the familiar Irish Hills. Always looking for new places to camp, I wanted to check out Moscow Maples RV Park, just past MIS. They were super friendly and let us ride through the campground to check it out. With my GoPro in place on my helmet, we made our way through the park.
They have many full hookup sites, reasonably priced. I was bummed to see a sign next door for a tractor pull taking place this weekend! We will be camping somewhere else. Perhaps next year.
Our next stop was Saucy Dog’s, a familiar haunt of ours out in Jonesville that we frequent when we’re out in this neck of the woods. Sitting at the traffic light before our turn, I noticed the massive, old brick building behind the restaurant looked quite different!
After dinner, I walked around a got a few more shots. The building, once a carriage factory, is now an apartment building.
Below is a stock photo I took in 2015 of how the building looked at the time. I was so happy to see this building saved, built in 1897.
After dinner, rather than head back the way we came, we opted to continue west on US-12 into Coldwater and pick up 69 north to 94 east. We passed through Allen, where I discovered that creepy old building, (and just recently learned was the Allen School) and as we continued on, passed an Amish family in a horse-drawn buggy. They returned our waves as we rode past. It was a good 90 minute freeway ride home, and stopping for gas, that familiar, sore, exhausted, overheated feeling came over us as we creakily got off our bikes at the gas pump. This is what we experience riding out west, times ten. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Our next Road Trip Sunday will be sometime in July, probably somewhere south of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Until then, thanks for coming along!
