Our days just don’t start out properly without a mechanical adjustment. After breakfast, Bill discovered a primary leak and our first stop turned out to be J&P Cycles again for a new gasket.
Our plan today was to climb Bear Butte, or Mato Palo, meaning bear mountain. It’s located off highway 79 east of Sturgis, and is another very sacred place to more than 30 native american tribes. Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and Red Cloud are known to have gathered here, along with other tribes to discuss the migration of white settlers to the area in 1857.
We made the trek up to the summit last year but with an approaching storm on the horizon, didn’t get to stay long. We hoped today to spend some time once we made it to the top.
The hike is an hour up and and hour down, treacherous in spots with steep steps on the switchbacks and loose rock. And windy! We chose today, with a high of 73. In the 90s, we wouldn’t have attempted it.
As always, the view from the top never disappoints.
We had several neighbors at the top today, taking in all the sights, and made our way down after about an hour. We’ll be feeling this tomorrow!
The Full Throttle Saloon is located not far from Bear Butte and was our next stop.
Main bar was the only area open so far, and it was pretty packed.
But we ran into our friends from Quebec..
Our days here are dwindling and I’m trying to hold on to the joy of being here as long as possible..

We accidentally were at Sturgis during the rally with a mini van and 3 young sons. It was quite the adventure passing through with all the festivities going on. I would have liked a ride on one of those bikes! 🙂
Laura recently posted…Ahhh Monday
🙂 Several people I know went through Sturgis accidentally during the rally, covering their kids’ eys, etc.. LOL
