Our day began around 2:45am with the most wicked storm front I’ve ever been in.  The wind was incredible, howling, and it literally seemed to come from all directions, like it was rolling off the trees and bouncing off everything it hit. We were watching the radar on our phones in our tent to be sure there was not a tornado warning in effect, it was that crazy. I regret not getting up to see what it looked like, I was half awake and cozy in my bed, but I’d have probably just wanted to stay out and photograph it!

Once the dust settled, our plan that day was to visit our “homestead” in Buffalo, but decided to visit Wall and the Badlands instead. Upon checking in on Facebook in Wall Drug, we learned our friends Kim and Troy were near, and we met for lunch at the Red Rock.

On the way in to Wall, I saw a motorhome parked with a compact car in tow. Written on the back was “Be Patient, I’m pushing as hard as I can!”.  LOL. Too bad it was gone by the time we left or I’d have gotten a pic.

The Badlands were next, we usually go in through 44 and exit at Wall, but we did it the opposite today, entering by Wall and exiting near Interior/Scenic.  At the Cedar Pass visitor center we hiked up a decent size formation and got a better view.

This change in plans was a blessing, because the storm we were headed for at the end of the day, was capable of, per the National Weather Service, producing “life threatening” hail.  OMG??

We stopped at the Horseshoe Bar, and these wonderful souls had put up this huge tent just for the purpose of providing shelter from the hail.

Luckily we waited just long enough for the storm to pass to the south and we caught only sprinkles from the edge of it. This would be the first of a few storms we would dodge.
