Today is the first of October and for the next month I’ll revel in all things Halloween. It got me wondering if Hallowe’en in Greenfield Village was still taking place, in the wake of these lovely challenges we’ve had this year. I looked it up and it is still on for this year, but I’m thinking I’ll bow out. I can’t imagine just how long the lines will be to get in with social distancing and how we will all meander through Greenfield Village while trying to stay six feet apart.
So instead I flipped back through my photos and I was taken back to the time we caught one of the showings of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Bill and I were walking through the village amidst all the glowing pumpkins when we came upon the school.
I’ve always wanted to see this show and we were quite early, so we parked ourselves on a front row bench and waited, bundled up in the cool night air as more folks arrived and gathered.
Man, was it worth it! This guy was mesmerizing. He narrated the entire story with such expression and enthusiasm, never stumbling over a word or missing a beat. And it was quite long! I wondered how much was memorized and how much he put together as he went. I guess once you’ve told the story a few hundred times, it’s second nature. It was such a great show.
I love this memory. Hallowe’en at Greenfield Village is always a fun time and one of my favorite traditions. As we were leaving the park, the icing on the cake was seeing the headless horseman.
I hope the weather holds out this year for all the folks going. Such a fun event!
