Afternoon coffee?  Come on in out of this balmy 19 degrees and cozy up next to the fire. I’m back from Florida and sure do miss the mild weather, although they will only be in the 50s this week, which is rather cold for them. I had a fantastic week with my dad and sister, celebrating my dad’s 91st birthday! I’ll recap the highlights in the DSF Weekly Rewind, if you’d like to head there next..

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you what a great day this is to stay under a blanket and read. I recently finished an ebook called The Witch of Delray, that I accidentally found on Hoopla. I don’t recall what I was searching for on Hoopla, but I’m sure it was nothing related to this book!  Funny that it popped up. It caught my eye as my grandparents and parents lived in Delray, a neighborhood in Detroit. It’s a story of Rose Veres and her sons, who ran a boarding house. Several of her tenants had reportedly died mysteriously, so the rumors and suspicion surrounded her. She was a Hungarian immigrant, as was my dad and his folks. I asked if he’d ever heard the name and he did not, but I did learn from him that Veres is pronounced VEDesh, and means “red” in Hungarian. Hmmm, Rose Red.  Pretty cool!  It was a good read.

Tomorrow, though, I will make it a point to get moving and start on the strengthening exercises for my upcoming surgery. I feel rather lazy and sluggish as I spent pretty much all my week sitting and visiting (like I’m doing today!). Time to get moving again, as much as I can. BUT! More books came in the mail while I was gone, including the one I’ve been dying to read, Heart Shaped Box!  Squeeeeeeeee!!! I’m going to have to set a timer.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that during my stay in FL, I was happy to catch up with a friend of my sister’s, Shara Abel, an awesome photographer! Check out her website when you can. She also gifted me an awesome lens case so my 55-300mm flew back to MI comfy in my carryon. I was able this week to capture some wildlife shots from my dad’s backyard, as he is across a canal from a bird sanctuary. I also captured a baby raccoon up in a neighbor’s camphor tree. Check back on my photography page in the next few days!

More coffee?  How was your week?

  1. It really is terrific reading weather! And a wonderful excuse to do nothing else. Knowing our ice and snow were coming, I even went to the library and stocked up on some extra books to read. (Ignoring the fact that I have enough books in my house to start my own bookstore.) But then I suddenly had this impulse to get started back on a new novel I had begun a short time before my friend was killed and I started having problems writing like I used to. And since I felt a new energy to write — rather than read — my stash from the library is still sitting on the desk collecting dust. But —- my newest novel is adding pages yesterday and today, and that is a real breakthrough. I feel pretty confident now that novel #13 will see the marketplace some time this year. So, if necessary, I’ll renew the books from the library for another two weeks. 🙂
