coffee by the campfire

Good morning on this chilly October Saturday! Thanks for joining us again on location for what is our last camping weekend of 2020. We’re here on the shores of Lake Erie at Sterling State Park. I can get you some coffee or perhaps some cappuccino.

We drove through a monsoon to get here last night, only to arrive to a power outage at the campground. We broke out the generator but still had a hard time getting the furnace going. After a trip into town for a gas can, space heater and electric blanket, we returned to the park and the power was restored shortly after. At least we don’t have to worry about securing the generator and the noise throughout the night. And sometime throughout the night, the furnace decided to work. We’re wondering if something got wet while driving through the sideways rain on the freeway.

I didn’t bring my kayak with me on this trip, as it’s only going up to 50 today. I still plan to do some fall paddling this year, but this weekend I decided to just do the Halloween thing and hang out at the campsite. It’s a rather small site, and it feels like we’re right on our neighbor’s lap. It’s full hookup, however, so we can take our time flushing out the tanks before we store the trailer for the season, which was the point of getting a full hookup site. I’d like to take a walk later though and make a note of any other sites that might be better than this one.

I did do the nail thing that I mentioned last week and it turned out pretty cool. Once I got the hang of how to apply the nail strips. Not too shabby for my first attempt.

I am very happy with how bright they glow! Just a few seconds under the light and they are brighter than I expected, hard to get a decent pic in the dark though. They also hold their glow for quite a while. I woke up Friday morning and my thumbs were still glowing.

Today I’ll decorate the campsite and we’ll see if we get any trick or treaters. I brought candy just in case. When we were at Bishop Lake, there were many kids in costume, even though it was not a Harvest weekend.

I’m glad that Halloween has survived so far. I wondered, back in March/April if it would become a thing of the past while everyone was mask, hand sanitizer and toilet paper crazy. People are going about it more cautiously, is all. I plan to have my mask on and dispense candy from my cauldron with a soup ladle.

Today I received an email at work from one of the committees who is putting on Hallopalooza. It will be a Zoom meeting on the evening of October 28th, where everyone carves pumpkins together with their cameras on. There will also be Halloween trivia!  How fun. This is the kind of thing I hoped would keep the Halloween spirit alive. As glad as I am to hear this, I don’t know if I’ll be able to join as it’s right at the time we’re having an estimate done for a privacy fence. Plus we already carved our pumpkins!

Are you reading anything good right now?  My Goodreads challenge is in bad shape this year, but I’m almost finished with Night of the Mannequins, a quick, fun read by Stephen Graham Jones. It’s turning out better than I thought it would! Next up I had planned the Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix until I learned that it was written after My Best Friend’s Exorcism in the same setting, another book by the same author. Though it’s not quite a sequel, I decided to read that one first, which I have to order. So next up is Shadow Vista, which I just recently received in the Night Worms September shipment. It’s another short read that I’ll slide in until the other book arrives.

So!  What are your plans for today. I sure wish it were warmer. Perhaps next time we can fill up our travel mugs and go for a socially distant hike.

Thanks for stopping by!  More coffee? Join us over at Eclectic Ali’s and join in the conversation!

  1. The carved pumpkins looks awesome. My daughter decided that since we are not doing Halloween in usual fashion we are doing all the pumpkin carving on Saturday, as a new tradition. I’m looking forward to it! We will also steal the idea of a Halloween Treasure Hunt in our house. Happy Halloween!
