It’s another beautiful morning for patio coffee! Grab a chair..
We’re four days into August and I’m already dreading the end of summer. August always sounded like a Fall month to me when I was younger, I don’t know why, when the Autumn Equinox isn’t until mid-September. We always went back to school after Labor Day, not like today. Even though I love Fall too, I’m not looking forward to seeing the leaves change just yet.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I hope to get out to Island Lake with my kayak today! It’s a much bigger, cleaner lake than the one I’ve been visiting and pulling trash out of. I need to figure out a way to better secure my boat since the last time I took it on the freeway, it slid back a little bit. It’s supposed to rain later so we’ll see.
If it does rain, I’ll get some more time in with my current addiction, Haunted Rock and Roll. This is such a good read and I’ve been learning a lot about these celebrities who have gone on to the concert venue in the sky.
This weekend had consisted of lots and lots of yard work. Yesterday I volunteered with my work to clean up the grounds of a Detroit elementary school. I took lots of before and after pics and look forward to sharing them. The school has a Little Free Library! A co-worker and I are going to find out about helping replenish these little gems in the area.
Then I came home and was still in weed pulling mode, so that’s what I did around my flower beds. I also planted this guy in the front landscaping, a dragon’s breath plant.
I had originally wanted a japanese maple for that spot, until I saw the price tag. Yikes! This will do just fine.
In cleaning out the garden area, I snipped off much of my cilantro that has gone to seed. I think I’ll put the seeds in one area of the garden space and see if I can start a cilantro bed, rather than the rows I had started with initially.
My windowsill basil is still doing amazing! I’ve brought in baggies of it to work to give away. I hope I can keep it going through the fall and winter. ??
Speaking of windows – August 12th! I can’t wait. They say that they’ll be done in one day, too. That will be so nice to have done..
Well, I should be going – my niece just replied that she’ll be joining me kayaking and suggested a river trip! Woohoo!!

Your basil is marvelous! Your cilantro too. You can never have too much cilantro and basil. I kind of look forward to fall and cooler weather. It’s only three months to Halloween? Right? Or something like that. Have a great rest of your weekend! Thank you very much for the coffee.
I’ve been using and giving away the basil, however I slacked and let the cilantro go to seed again. However, I picked off all the seeds and sprinkled them in one corner of my garden so hopefully next year I’ll have a more concentrated crop. I’ll make it a point to put tomatoes in on time and maybe I’ll try my hand at salsa.. 🙂 Yes, as a huge Halloween fan, I’m looking forward to it but I don’t want to let summer go!
I love that the school has a little free library.

I’m hoping to find more through their website and help replenish them!
Hi Kathleen.
Too bad you are so far away from California. I have about a hundred Japanese maple sprouts in our back yard in the shade of our new celebrity squash plant. Check it out @ https://garyawilsonstories.wordpress.com/2019/08/04/our-little-accidental-garden/.
I’d love to share some sprouts with you.

Oh, that would be so nice!!! Thank you for the thought! Those are beautiful trees.
We have a Little Library on our property for the neighbourhood kids—I was just saying to Ken the other day that it could use a new coat of paint! Hope you enjoy the kayaking 😊
