Good morning and come on in from the cold! I’ll pour you something hot, and we can go out later and ice skate on my front lawn! Yesterday’s rain flooded it out and today it’s frozen over.

How was your holiday season? I’ve missed the last several coffee shares – over Christmas I flew to Florida to spend the week with my dad and NYE was a quiet one. We kept up the tradition of planning our South Dakota road trip but didn’t end up getting much done. Work was relatively quiet as well, considering it’s our busiest time of year. We now begin a new year with new projects and I’m hopeful it’s a good one.

Yesterday I went through a foot tall stack of papers that have accumulated in my office. I spent the morning scanning to PDF things to save in my Evernote, and pitched/shredded the rest. I still have two overstuffed desk drawers that need to be gone through, but I’m sure I’ll have plenty of crummy weekend days ahead to spend in my office, sorting and scanning. It was nice to get all that thinned out but it was daunting. Perhaps I’ll do several folders at a time.

Today we will order our 2020 calendar from Shutterfly. I manage to receive a coupon with my Kohl’s invoice every year for a free 8 x 10 wall calendar. It’s fun to go back through our photos from the year and choose one for each upcoming month, reliving our memories. 2020 will be our third consecutive calendar.

Last Wednesday I attended a Silent Book Club meeting at our library, and dove into The Apparitionists, by Peter Manseau, a Christmas gift from Bill. I’m really enjoying it so far. I mainly read fiction, so it’s nice to read up on actual history once in a while! LOL This book focuses mainly on William Mumler, a “spirit photographer” of the late 1800s. Ghosts and photography? A perfect gift!

However, we learned sadly that this may be the last Silent Book Club meeting at our library. The dear soul who facilitates is retiring and we haven’t had a huge turnout to begin with. So we’ll see what happens. She also shared several handouts on reading challenges which go beyond just a total amount of books, such as a classic you didn’t read in school, or an audio book of poetry. Hmmm..

I’m happy to say that on the fitness front I’ve completed 9 consecutive days of meeting my FitBit step goal, water intake goal and fasting for 18 hours daily. I wish I were happier with the results, which have been minimal, but I know I need to stick with it longer than 9 days. This is the hardest part!

My basil is surviving! Along with my gerbera daisy which has bloomed I don’t know how many times! I love having fresh basil throughout the winter, I didn’t know if this would be possible, but the plants are still doing very well, except for the one on the left, he’s a little limp even though they are all sufficiently watered. Every now and again I pick off leaves and share them with co-workers. I’ll probably need to harvest some again this week and take them in to work.

I can’t WAIT to put tomato plants in this year. We got a really late start last year and only got a few. I learned they freeze well (chopped up in ziploc bags) and homemade tomato sauce is amazing!

Well, I must be going, thanks so much for stopping by! I need to catch up on some blogging today, also. I’m delinquent in the Hike and Seek blog series I had the best of intentions for at the beginning of the winter season. I’m going to attempt to recap two recent hikes we went on, one was a lantern hike, which was really cool! I also purchased a metropark pass yesterday which I’m excited to receive. This pass will allow entry into 13 of our local metroparks, many of which I’ve never visited.

Our coffee share host, Eclectic Alli, is back, and a huge thanks to our dear fellow blogger, Antoinette, for taking the torch in her absence. Come on by for some coffee and tell us about your week!

  1. Hi Kathleen,
Sorry to be so late this week. I’ve had distractions.

Your basil plants look great. We had to give up growing out own because there was almost no defending the plants from slugs who were all but killing our plants overnight.

What is a Silent Book Club? We did one with friends for a while many years ago and loved it. But we were anything but silent. I hope your survives or, perhaps, you may find a new one. Is it just me or have “book clubs” not really migrated to Kindle based readers. . . ?

    1. Hi Gary, no problem, I’m sorry for responding so late! Yes, anything I planted, outside of tomatoes, gets destroyed by the squirrels in my neighborhood. So my basil will be kept indoors. I wonder how long these original plants will last?

A Silent Book Club is a gathering where people meet, take a moment to introduce themselves and what they are reading, and then they all read in silence for an hour or so. It really was cool meeting other readers, though it was only a few of us at each meeting. And dedicating an hour to read with no disruptions was very nice! Other than that, I’m not involved with any other kind of book club, so I’m not sure about the Kindle thing.
